The Prediction Error

I spent twenty years explaining habits to patients who already understood them perfectly, and I could not work out why nothing changed. The answer is that dopamine does not score what felt good. It scores what your brain did not see coming, and that one correction rewrites what a craving is, what a relapse is, and why a good explanation never fixes either.
